FAQs

What will my daughter gain from attending each Girls Who Read program?

Our mission is to encourage girls across the nation to recognize and share a love of literacy through diverse texts and academic based dialogue. Our goal is to cultivate a mindset that yearns for the opportunity to empower and inspire others.

Through exposure, accountability, and community service, Girls Who Read participants will learn tangible ways to navigate the world with positive thinking, integrity, as well as a growth mindset.

We envision a world free from systemic boundaries that prohibit our youth from having access to literacy, resources, and equally important academic dialogue. Empowering and safe spaces are created in order to act as a continuum of care and ultimately inspire young women to manifest their dreams into reality, all while engaging in rigorous discussions centered around diverse perspectives. We seek to empower Girls Who Read participants by exemplifying educational liberation and providing adequate resources through our college and career readiness literacy programs.

Girls Who Read provides tutoring and mentorship throughout the calendar year. More specifically, we have a team of licensed and credentialed teachers who volunteer with Girls Who Read each year. During our sessions, we provide opportunities for our Girls Who Read participants to engage with necessary resources and materials that will prepare them for the world beyond the classroom doors.

Does Girls Who Read offer a peer to peer program; is it for all ages?

Girls Who Read is a non-profit organization where we aim to empower others and inspire all through a shared love of literacy. Our participants range from 3rd-8th grade. Currently, the facilitators include master teachers and educators with a minimum of 5 years experience in the field of education, a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s encouraged but not required), and a letter of recommendation explaining strengths in regards to mentorship, community service, and literacy based practices. We are excited to launch our big sister peer program, where our alumni (ranging from 9th-12th grade) are partnered with a participant (ranging from 3rd-8th grade) and provide mentorship, coaching and tutoring for their “little sister”.

Where are the Girls Who Read cohorts located?

Our program here at Girls Who Read is an organization that spans across multiple states. We hold virtual learning spaces so that our participants across the nation can connect with one another. We currently hold in person sessions in California, Louisiana, as well as Nevada. Our volunteers are flexible to travel to all areas in South Los Angeles, Summerlin, North Las Vegas,  Henderson, and other locations. We are looking forward to expanding in the near future. We have a strong partnership with Proficient Readers Literacy Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and we are proud to provide access to literacy tutoring in the South Louisiana area.

During the Girls Who Read Fall Fitness program we offer mind, body, and soul wellness courses, which include several yoga sessions held by a professional yoga instructor (also known as a Yogini) as well as a panel discussion held by doctors and nurses across the nation. This program stimulates the mind, while taking care of the body. Also, we discuss and promote healthy eating habits and best practices for mental and physical health.

Do you provide workshops for your Girls Who Read participants?

Absolutely! During our Girls Who Read sessions, we purchase grade-level-appropriate texts and engage in academic discourse. Additionally, we welcome influential women into our spaces from various backgrounds to our Girls Who Read participants. Our girls are told empowering stories and inspired to accomplish their goals. Some of our previous “Women on Influence” were pilots, book store owners, and professional athletes.

During our winter service season, we collaborate as a group and create an action plan in order to provide equitable resources for local families in need. It is important that our Girls Who Read participants contribute to our world in countless ways through various initiatives and ultimately become active members of our community. We encourage our girls to participate and engage in empowering activities that will build literacy, leadership, and advocacy skills!
